James Schaefer started his professional life as a session musician and recording engineer, before a stint as a designer and technician at Charles M. Salter Associates, a San Francisco-based acoustical design and engineering firm.  A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he founded his own firm in 2004, after developing his design chops at Ned Forrest Architects in Sonoma, California and John B. Murray Architect in New York City.  He lives with his family in a renovated Victorian townhouse in Brooklyn.
